Foster Healing: inspirational stories for a new year

Healing, love, hope, care. These are some of the things that caregivers offer to children in their homes. Children, youth and infants that enter the foster care system come from hard, traumatic places and our families get the privilege of coming alongside them and witness the healing, love and hope that occurs. We have asked our families to share some of their inspirational stories as we start this new year.

Foster Healing

When Sarah* entered foster care at just four years old, her life was filled with uncertainty. Her mother, Lisa, was battling addiction, and Sarah’s safety and well-being were at risk. The decision was made to place Sarah in foster care to provide her with stability and a nurturing environment while Lisa received the help she needed.

Sarah was welcomed into the home of the McDougall family, experienced foster parents who opened their hearts to children in need. For the next five years, the McDougall’s provided Sarah with love, stability, and the structure she needed to grow. They celebrated her milestones, from her first day of kindergarten to her first dance recital.

At the same time, Lisa embarked on a difficult but courageous journey. Determined to rebuild her life for Sarah’s sake, Lisa enrolled in a comprehensive addiction recovery program. She participated in counseling, attended support groups, and worked tirelessly to address the root causes of her struggles.

The foster care system isn’t just about providing temporary homes; it’s about supporting families through their challenges. Throughout Sarah’s time in care, Lisa tried to maintain contact with Sarah but sometimes, due to relapses, long stretches without contact occurred. As the four-year mark approached supervised visits gradually became more frequent as Lisa demonstrated progress in her recovery.

The McDougalls, understanding the importance of Sarah’s connection with her mother, went above and beyond to facilitate this bond. They shared updates, sent photos, and encouraged Sarah to express her feelings about her mother. Over time, a relationship of mutual respect and collaboration grew between the McDougalls and Lisa.

After five years of hard work, with relapses and progress, Lisa achieved a major milestone: she was ready to reunite with Sarah. The transition was carefully planned and supported by social workers, therapists, and the McDougall family.

The day Sarah returned to live with her mother was filled with tears, hugs, and a sense of triumph. Lisa had not only reclaimed her life but had also proven that recovery and change are possible.

Today, Sarah and Lisa are thriving. Their home is filled with laughter, love, and a sense of gratitude for the journey that brought them back together. The McDougalls remain part of their lives, providing extended family support and reminding Sarah of the love that carried her through difficult times.
